On June 25, 2025, the global maritime community was united to observe The Day of the Seafarer, with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) theme “My Harassment-Free Ship”. This year’s focus highlights the need for a maritime environment where seafarers are free from harassment, fostering a culture of respect, safety, and dignity at sea.

In support of this year’s theme, Team Senator invited the Managing Director of Mental Health Support Solutions (Manila) and Clinical Psychologist Ms. Karen Gail Ibanez and shared her professional insights regarding this topic.

Ms. Ibanez engaged the attendees by opening the topic interactively, inviting them to identify actions and signals they considered harassment. The seafarers shared their perspectives, which set the stage for a deeper discussion. She then defined harassment, explaining that it can take several forms: verbal, physical, sexual, psychological, and bullying. As she broke down each type, Ms. Ibanez helped the attendees understand how to recognize when these behaviors cross the line into harassment. This not only broadened the seafarers’ awareness but also empowered them to better identify such situations if they arise. She emphasized not only the importance of speaking up, reminding everyone that there is an open reporting system and encouraging them to reach out to the Welfare Team and MHSS for support when needed – but also the maritime laws that protect our seafarers from harassment.

Team Senator has also organized a comprehensive series of discussions aimed at both educating and caring for seafarers, addressing critical issues that impact their overall well-being. One of the key sessions focused on the Effects of Drug and Alcohol on Health, which was facilitated by Dr. Jane Camino from SuperCare. In her talk, Dr. Camino highlighted the physical and mental health risks associated with substance use, stressing how it can affect a seafarer’s ability to perform their duties effectively and safely. She emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially in the challenging and isolated environment of the sea.

Another significant discussion was led by Capt. Paul Francia, who shared his insights on Drug and Alcohol Policy. He outlined the maritime industry’s regulations and the importance of adhering to these guidelines to ensure safety onboard. Capt. Francia’s talk underscored that maintaining a substance-free environment not only supports the health of individual seafarers but also contributes to the overall safety of the crew and vessel.

Together, these discussions aimed to raise awareness about the profound impact that substance use can have on both physical and mental well-being, particularly in the demanding maritime environment. The program reinforced the message that seafarers must prioritize their health and well-being, urging them to make responsible choices and seek support if needed. By addressing these crucial topics, Team Senator is helping to foster a healthier, safer, and more sustainable environment for those who work at sea.

Simultaneously, Team Senator hosted an open house job fair, providing seafarers with new career opportunities and a chance to explore various maritime roles. To enhance the overall experience, a wellness program is also available, featuring a dessert buffet, along with free massages and haircuts. This initiative is designed to offer seafarers a much-needed break, allowing them to unwind and rejuvenate after long hours of hard work.

As the day ended, the collective efforts to promote a harassment-free environment and prioritize the physical and mental health of seafarers were clear. The series of discussions and activities provided invaluable resources and tools for seafarers to navigate both their professional and personal lives more safely and healthily. By fostering a culture of respect, open communication, and support, Team Senator is helping ensure that seafarers feel valued and empowered, creating a future where all maritime professionals can work with dignity, free from harassment and harm.
