The maritime industry has long been considered a male-dominated field, with women historically underrepresented in positions such as ship captains, engineers, and port directors. However, in recent years, there has been a noticeable shift. Women now represent a growing percentage of the maritime workforce, and this trend is only gaining momentum as gender equality initiatives, global campaigns, and educational programs continue to pave the way for future generations of female maritime professionals.

According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), women currently make up about 2% of the global maritime workforce. While this number still reflects the underrepresentation of women, the industry is moving toward greater inclusion, with many organizations actively working to improve gender balance.

This year, Team Senator participated in celebrating women by endorsing Pink Fridays – wherein all employees are encouraged to wear something pink every Friday of March, to show their support in uplifting women in a predominantly male industry. Female seafarers of Team Senator also shared their advice to those who are pursuing their dream career at sea.

Women’s Month is an ideal time to celebrate the progress that women in the maritime industry have made and to reflect on the challenges still ahead. The maritime industry’s future is not just about navigating the seas; it’s about navigating toward a more equal and inclusive industry for all.
