7th National Data Privacy Conference #PAW2024

Ms. Dianne Alilin, President and Quality Manager of Senator Crewing (Manila) Inc. attended on Thursday, May 30, 2024, the 7th National Data Privacy Conference #PAW2024 held at Solaire Resort and Casino.

For this year’s theme “Data Privacy for All: Embracing Inclusivity and Diversity” emphasized on data privacy for all data subjects regardless of one’s age, background, socio-economic status, experiences, identity, or circumstances.

Privacy Awareness Week 2024 (PAW) focused on protecting the data privacy rights of vulnerable individuals as most security and privacy mechanisms were designed with the general population in mind leaving many specific groups such as PWDs, indigenous people, senior citizens and children.

In summary, it can be generally said that “Privacy is not a privilege; it is a universal right. Therefore, every individual’s privacy must be respected and protected.”

The conference also discussed the challenges and dangers in processing of personal data on vulnerable individuals – in which it listed as: 1.) Knowledge and understanding of individual on their right to data privacy specially for children; 2.) Lack of IT capacity and vulnerability to security threats specially for senior citizens; and 3.) Time-consuming process that challenges PWDs during collection and processing of data.

Best practices of protecting data privacy, specifically for children, were elaborated such as the awareness and education about their privacy rights and to choose what information to share and with whom. In this matter, parents are to lead by example. Basic data protection procedure and reminders was then discussed.
